An immaculate and very rare solid gold Rolex "Air King". This watch is part of the long established and popular Rolex "Air" series. The "Air" series from Rolex came to pass as a result of Mr. Hans Wilsdorf's, the founder of Rolex, deep admiration for the pilots of the RAF, and the sacrifices made during WWII, and the fact that many had chosen to wear his watches. Rolex introduced a number of "Air" branded watches; "Air Tiger", "Air Giant", "Air Lion","Air Tiger" and this the "Air King". The "Air King" is perhaps the best known model in this series, and the only one that has stood the test of time, still featuring in the Rolex stable today. The first "Air King" was launched by Rolex in 1945, and took on a number of different guises and references. This watch is one of the later models that shares the same reference as the early smaller cased Rolex Explorer model; 5500. The serial number for the watch is 1,232,XXX dating it circa 1965. The nine carat case is in exceptional condition showing only very light signs of polishing, if any over the years. Inside the case back has full English import marks, and this is why it is nine carat gold, as it was made for the UK market. All the numbers and gold stamps are crisp and clean, and the lugs are sharp. The dial is original, exceptional and also rare showing a full set of Arabic numerals. It also still has the round lume plots on all 11 of the hour markers. The movement inside the watch is the automatic Rolex calibre 1530. The case measures 34mm x 40mm.
